2016 Kona quest begins for James Cunnama in Mallorca

Thursday, September 24, 2015, 06:06 AM GMT

As he toes the starting line at Ironman Mallorca this weekend, James Cunnama is already looking forward to his 2016 Ironman World Championship campaign.

The South African has had a challenging first half of the year with illness blocking his path to Kona, but the past few months have seen him getting back on form with podium performances in Europe.

He says, "It has been a challenging year, but the last few months have been some good training and racing, with a few podiums to celebrate. I am looking forward to moving those 2nds and 3rds to the top step this weekend in Mallorca.”

This is his first time to race Ironman Mallorca’s non-wetsuit swim, hilly bike, and scenic run. Cunnama is raring to give it a go. “From all accounts the course is a good one which will suit me. Bring it on!"

Also on the starting line is David Plese from the Bahrain Endurance Racing Team.

Ironman Mallorca is one of the first races this year that will be awarding qualifying points for the 2016 Ironman World Championship. “This will also kick off the Kona 2016 campaign,” Cunnama admits. Post-race he will be flying to Hawaii to lend his support to partner Jodie Swallow and the other Bahrain Endurance Team members racing Kona.
