Mikel Calahorra is the first age group athlete to become a member of the Bahrain Endurance 13 Team. A four-time Ironman World Championship qualifier and finisher, Mikel coaches Bahrain’s long-distance triathlon group headed by His Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
An avid athlete from his childhood in Spain, Mikel eventually turned to triathlons even as he relocated to Bahrain for work as an engineer. As he began racing locally with other expats, he was approached to train the princes for Ironman competition and was instrumental in bringing in long-distance triathlon races to the region.
He created the first Middle East girls team, who began from zero fitness to completing half-iron distance competitions. He also coaches the reigning Arab and African duathlon champion, and coached the first ever Bahraini woman to finish an Ironman.
